Asia Cup 2025 Suryakumar Yadav Captain, Gill Vice-Captain—Iyer & Jaiswal Dropped

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced its 15-member Team India Squad for the Asia Cup 2025, with Suryakumar Yadav Captain leading the side and Shubman Gill Vice-Captain serving as his deputy. The tournament, scheduled from September 9-28 in the UAE, marks a significant shift in India’s T20I leadership structure.

Leadership Changes Signal New Era

The appointment of Suryakumar Yadav as captain comes after his sensational IPL 2025 form, where he amassed 717 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 167.91. His elevation to the captaincy role reflects selectors’ confidence in his leadership abilities and tactical acumen in the shortest format.

Shubman Gill’s appointment as vice-captain has generated considerable discussion among cricket experts. The Test captain’s return to T20I cricket after a year-long absence demonstrates the selectors’ long-term vision. “We obviously see some leadership qualities in him and his form in England was what we were hoping for,” said BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Notable Omissions Spark Debate

The most controversial aspect of the squad announcement has been the Shreyas Iyer Omission, despite his outstanding IPL 2025 performance where he scored 604 runs at an average of 50.33 and strike rate of 170.07. Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik termed Iyer’s exclusion “tad bit unfair,” questioning how a player in such form could miss out entirely.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s absence from the main squad, despite his impressive international debut and strong England tour, has also raised eyebrows among cricket analysts.

Squad Composition and Tournament Prospects

The squad features a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talents, with Jasprit Bumrah making his return to white-ball cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup. India’s bowling attack will be led by Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, while the spin department features world No. 4 Varun Chakravarthy.

As defending champions and eight-time winners, India will begin their campaign against hosts UAE on September 10, before facing Pakistan in the marquee clash on September 14.
